What it is
Heat transfer presses a pre-made design onto fabric using a heat press. Two flavors dominate: cut vinyl (HTV), where a machine cuts letters and shapes from colored vinyl sheets, and printed transfers, where a full-color image is printed then pressed on. Both skip the setup that screen printing needs.
How it works
For HTV, a plotter cuts your design from a sheet of heat-activated vinyl, then the excess is “weeded” away by hand, leaving just the letters or shapes. That vinyl is positioned on the garment and pressed at heat and pressure until the adhesive bonds. Printed transfers work similarly but carry a full-color printed image rather than a solid vinyl color. Either way, there’s no screen and no per-color setup, so a single custom piece is entirely practical.
Pros, cons, and best for
The strengths: unbeatable for personalization — names and numbers on team jerseys, one-off shirts, and tiny runs — with no minimum order. The limits: it sits on top of the fabric so it can feel slightly heavier, layering many colors is fiddly, and over dozens of hot washes it’s less durable than a cured screen print. Best for personalization, small runs, and athletic and team gear.
Versus other methods
For volume, screen printing is cheaper and more durable; for full-color detail at low quantity, DTG usually feels better on the garment. Heat transfer wins specifically when you need names, numbers, or a handful of pieces on custom t-shirts.
